Close Your Eyes and Breathe Deeply Summer Perfection from Getaria, Spain...
My wife, Kerin Auth Bembry, is a specialist and whisperer of all things Spain and her company, La Luz Selections, works closely with a number of great wineries on the Iberian Peninsula. And she beautifully conveyed what it is like to transport yourself to another place. Here it is...
Close your eyes and breathe deeply. Day dream yourself perched on vineyard bluffs overlooking the ocean, wind gusting the salty sea mist to your lips, that ocean air permeating your sun kissed skin…so real you can feel it, taste it, smell it. Where would you imagine yourself to be on this hot summer’s day in late July? Where is your summertime happy escape place? Mine is Getaria, in Gipuzkoa, 20 minutes outside of San Sebastian on the northern Basque coast of Spain. It is breathtaking, visually reminiscent of the PCH Route Highway 1 as you drive down the California coast. A green, lush, rugged, charming paradise. The history of this ancient Basque culture is impermeable - the people proud and powerful, their world renowned gastronomy luxurious in flavor yet so simple in presentation. Life there seems more simple and pure, more humble and grounded in their deep rooted traditions that honor the cultivation of their land and sea. Txakoli is their vinous contribution to the world and nothing screams summer like this fizzy fresh salty splash of lemon lime to the face. Reminiscent of a margarita if a margarita was a light white wine with 11% alcohol. Zing, zang, zoom are just a couple of adjectives that come to mind, but this lip smacking, slightly effervescent wine will quench your thirst all summer long. Perfect for picnics, boat outings, beach days, porch pounding, oyster slamming, seafood fests, backyard bottles, and lake lounging. Or an aperetif to anything! Gañeta Getariako Txakolina 2019 - $21 per bottle, $19.50 each on 6 bottles - $18 each on a case of 12.
