A Crazy Visit Yesterday Turned Into Our Wine of the Month...Marc Delienne
It's rare indeed that a visit from a producer so moves me that I drop everything and instantly make their offering our Wine of the Month a day before the month begins. But Marc Delienne is a rare individual, in the best of ways. His winemaking chops include learning the craft at Domaine de Trevallon, the iconic Provence estate, after just up and leaving his job in Paris on a mission to learn about the making of his obsession, wine. Throwing everything into it, Marc later acquired an estate in Fleurie and begin making pure, authentic wines dripping with character. And while his wines are serious as a heart attck, the man is not. Classic cru appellations like Fleurie and Brouilly have kistchy wine names like "Greta Carbo", a play on the actress and the process of carbonic maceration which partially produces some wines. But his process is that of "natural"...minimal manipulation, no fining, no filtering, barely any sulfur. However, the wines are fruit-driven and passionately rendered. In short, superb... I adored his Fleurie "Abbaye Road" 2015, a wine that of course conjures thoughts of the Beatles but is also simple the address of the winery (Rue de l'Abbaye). Filled with a deep core of black cherry, minerals, blood orange and fresh herbs, it is a stunning example of just how great cru Beaujolais can be. Our March 2019 Wine of the Month is the Marc Delienne Fleurie "Abbaye Road" 2015. You're going to love this as much as we did... |
