Terrific Buy in Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon - 2009 Arbios Cellars On Sale for Under $30 - Wine Arrives Friday April 11th Head to Perrotti's, grab some steaks and spark up the grill! With the variable and short crop in 2011, finding good, affordable Cabernet from California has become a serious challenge, so we were totally stoked when the team tasted this super high value Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. A new find for us, Bill Arbios founded the winery in 1993 after a careeer making wine for many notable wineries. His goal was to make a single Bordeaux-style red wine, made from 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grown in the Alexander Valley of Sonoma County. His first vintage was just 125 cases, and even now he only makes about 2,500 cases per year. The 2009 is all estate grown Cabernet from one of the highest and northernmost vineyards in Sonoma County’s Alexander Valley (at about 2000 feet.) His goal is to produce a wine that captures the essence of this unique vineyard site, mainly broken rock for soils, and a climate influenced by the altitude, with an average of eight degrees difference between his vineyard and the valley floor. They beleve this allows a slower, more even ripening rate, and more deeply colored, highly flavored fruit which achieves physiological maturity at a lower sugar level (and a modest alcohol level of 13.6%.) Even thought the wine is 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, the final wine is the result of blending various parcels of the vineyard, each with different clones of Cabernet. Clonal selection was made with low yield and small berry size in mind to match the different soil types and microclimates of the vineyard. Yields are a tiny 2 tons to the acre - about half to a third that of vineyards on the valley floor. Arrives Friday April 11th, order now for the weekend! Arbios Cellars Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 - $29.99 On Sale - $27.99 on six or more (reg $35) - Beautifully balanced Cabernet from the Alexander Valley, this has good solid structure and dark fruit, hints of sandalwood, plum and cedar, nicely integrated oak, and a core of dark mocha/earthy Alexander Valley character. A moderate alcohol of 13.6% for California keeps this wine in check, with plenty of body and concentration but not over the top at all. A wine that drinks great now, especially with a decanting, and will do so over the next 4-5 years.
