Mature California Cabernet - Back Vintages from Renaissance Winery Incredible classic, old school California Reds - Ready to drink! Renaissance Cellars was founded in 1978 in the Sierra Foothills 70 miles North of Sacramento in Oregon House, California. How this incredible winery has stayed under the radar for so long is pretty much beyond me, but it was great to "discover" them when I recently tasted through a selection of back vintages and was totally amazed! Solid, cool classically styled wines - no doubt they needed some age to hit their stride as they are still fresh, focused and beautiful today, with deep dark earth tones and good supporting tannins. Almost more Bordeaux like than modern California, these are fine elegant wines with loads of character. Think Mayacamas, Ridge Montebello, old Montelena! What is also amazing is that they are not from Napa or Sonoma, but from the Sierra Foothills in vineyards at 1700-2300 feet. Unfortunately the word is out on these wines so don't wait as we have very limited amounts of both wines and the NY Somms are glomming them up as we speak! 2000 Proprietary Red Claret Prestige $55 on sale (reg $75) - This is a unique blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon that is cool, silky, deep and balanced. Lovely earth tones, cedar, hints of red earth fruit too. Opens up beautifully, best with about half hour decant. Reminiscent of older Bordeaux. ARRIVES LATE MARCH 1984 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate $79.99 on sale (reg $95) - Fine mature Cabernet notes - cedar, mushroom, dark fruits, spicebox, again, has me thinking good mature Bordeaux or classic iconic California Cabernets like Mayacamas, Ridge, Togni. Varieties are planted in carefully selected microclimates and soil combinations to maximize their potential. We practice organic viticulture, and use no pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides other than elemental sulfur. The combination of poor soils and old vines limits our yields to well below 1.5 tons per acre on average. (In comparison, Napa Valley averages about 4 tons per acre.)" What makes their wine distinctive - "Our unique terroir leaves its unmistakable signature in each of our wines. Regardless of the variety, all tend to be concentrated, intensely flavored, with pure fruit aromas, a marked spicy/minerally side, and a powerful structure. Consequently, Renaissance wines have outstanding aging potential, and increase in complexity and harmony over the course of many years in the bottle. Even our white wines age exceedingly well, developing rich honeyed, nutty flavors with extended cellaring." |
