Elizabeth Spencer - One of our Favorite California Wineries! |
I first met Elizabeth Pressler on a trip to California in 1979 (yipes, am I that old?) when she was just beginning her career in wine at Joseph Phelps Winery. She began at Phelps in 1978 and worked her way up from Tour Guide to assisting Bruce Neyers with marketing, and then managed hospitality for the winery, a position that included all aspects of food and wine pairings and introduced her to Alice Waters, Madeline Kammen and Elizabeth Davis, some of the top food luminaries of the day. She went on to manage Marketing for Chalk Hill and Hess Wineries, and then consulted for Araujo, Dalla Valle, Etude, Franciscan, Harlan, Seavey, Viader and many more. Eventually, after helping to develop so many successful wineries, she realized it was time to do it on her own and created Elizabeth Spencer in 1998 with her husband Spencer Graham. Spencer came from the restaurant business, and then moved into wine distribution, owning his own restaurant and then a wine distributor in the D.C. area. Together, their experience and understanding of the wine business at all levels has allowed them to be successful in launching their winery. But even more important to me is their love and understanding of how wine and food is so intertwined, and its influence on the style of wines they make. Spencer with his years as Chef, and Elizabeth with her early influence as a child in a family that loved to cook and entertain and later at Phelps and the many other wineries she worked with, are dedicated to making balanced, elegant wines, not always easy in sunny California! Yet they succeed spectacularly, producing wines that have unmistakable California character, fruit and body, yet retaining elegance and harmony at the same time. They are among some of my very favorite California wines, and better yet, they accomplish all of this and deliver extraordinary quality at very reasonable prices! Today we are offering a trio of wines from this terrific winery, each a perfect example of Elizabeth and Spencer's philosophy of making balanced, food friendy wines that are expressive of their California roots. Mix a case or two and between the crisp, lively Sauvignon Blanc, the delicious Sonoma Coast Chardonnay and the rich yet supple and silky Napa Cabernet you'll be ready for just about anything! Meet the Wine Maker - Stop in Saturday for a tasting with Pinto Navarene of Rasa Vineyards in Walla Walla Washington - we'll be tasting his wines all weekend but Pinot will be at the shop from 1pm - 4pm on Saturday!
