Today I felt it would be nice to celebrate Earth Day with an offer of terrific crisp Domaine Goisot takes all the guess work out as they are certified organic and Biodynamic, creating beautiful wines from their vineyards in Saint Bris just outside of the Chablis Appellation. The family has ties to the region as far back as the 14th century, and grapes have been grown here since the 2nd century. Prior to the phylloxera epidemic of the late 1800's that devastated the region's vineyards it was included in as part of Chabils, which made sense as the vineyards share much of the same Kimmerdigian limestone and cool northern climate as its more famous neighbor. It is now part of the Cote d'Auxerre, and as such only entitled to the Bourgogne Appellation. One advantage however, as the soils also share some commonality to those of Sancerre in the Loire, is that they are allowed to grow Sauvignon Blanc too, which they do with tremendous success! The wines of this Domaine are as expected from this terroir: crisp, focused, mineral and clean. They have lovely mouthwatering minerality and acidity, beautiful drive and focus, and a stony component that comes from their roots in the limestone soils where they are grown. And they are great values too, selling for less than either their Loire Valley or Burgundian counterparts while producing wines with much of the same character and quality. While each of the following wines has its own unique character, they do share a common theme of cool, crisp, fresh, and focused, and all are fermenteed in stainless steel. When I visited them a few years back the wines were absolutley perfect with our traditional Burgundian "crust breaker" lunch of Jambon Persilles, cured meats, pates, cornichons, salade vert, and crusty French Bread, and will also pair great with all kinds of appetizers, seafood, shellfish or sushi. Mix up a case and be ready for spring time sipping - Cheers! Chris Cree MW, 56 Degree Wine Goisot Bourgogne Aligote 2012 - $14.99 on sale - Aligote is relatively little known grape that is grown in Burgundy and typically enjoyed more by the locals who have a sense of loyalty and pride than seen on wine lists around the world. The Goisot Aligote is polished and clean, with even a little creaminess to it, a bit more four-square than Chardonnay, with good mouthfeel and presence and that classic minerality and acidity that come from limestone and cool climates. Unique and delicious and a great Chardonnay alternative! Goisot Chardonnay Corps de Garde Cote d'Auxerre 2011 -$23.50 on sale - Super mineral, crisp and focused, with lovely lemony acidity, a good core of solid chardonnay fruit and beautiful, and Chablis like stoniness. All stainless fermentation keeps it crisp, lively and pure. Goisot Saint Bris Sauvignon Blanc 2012 Exogyra Virgula - $18 on sale - This has been a core item in the shop and many of you may have already had this delicious wine that is one of our "go-to" values in Sauvignon Blanc. Fresh crisp, lively, with good Sauvignon character, citrus and herb notes on the nose and palate. Named for the fossilized shels that are abundant in the rocks in the vineyards. Goisot Fie Gris Corps de Garde Saint-Bris 2011 - $22 on sale - This wine is made from Fie Gris, a lesser known ancestor of Sauvignon Blanc - perhaps a bit more aromatic, less grassy and herbal would be a fair description although I have never had it from any other producer. Fine, elegant, and mineral in style - cool and crisp and refreshing with plenty of character. Perfect with all kinds of seafood, sushi, shellfish and appetizers, or all on its own as an aperitif.
