Ready to Drink Library Release German - Schloss Schönborn Estate Riesling Kabinett 2007 - On Sale $14.99 As I wrote a year ago when we offered a wine from the 1990 vintage from this great estate, there are very few wines as compelling in my wine lexicon as mature German Riesling - the problem is that they are so good when they are young, it's hard to keep your hands off them long enough for them to blossom and hit their stride. How does such a deceivingly delicate wine manage to pull off this metamorphosis, often gaining complexities that will rival the best white Burgundies? It is partly due to its naturally high acidity in the cool northern climate of Germany's Rhine, coupled with its high dry extract, and in this case, its roots in some of the best terroir in Germany, that somehow magically combined to keep this wine fresh and interesting into its third decade and longer. And did I mention they are some of the best values in wine? This beautiful off dry wine is showing beautifully! Just coming into its own it is still fresh, crisp and lively, just off dry, with citrus, quince and green apple notes. It is intense and focused, with lovely acidity and drive - stony and mineral, with hints of apple pie spices in the finish. A wine that is drinking well now and will do so for another 5 years at least. All this at a riduclously low price! Wine Arrives Friday March 15th Schloss Schönborn 2007 Estate Riesling Kabinett This is the oldest estate in Germany under continuous family ownership: 27 generations (seriously!!) spanning over 650 years. “No other estate in the Rheingau possesses such a bevy of fine vineyards as this highly traditional property in Hattenheim,” writes Joel Payne. Indeed, their formidable holdings of 50ha in the Rheingau comprise choice parcels in 38 vineyards, which include virtually all of the top sites of the appellation. Most have been in the family’s care since 1349; several fabulous sites, like the grand cru Erbacher Marcobrunn, were added in the 17th and 18th centuries. Ninety percent of the production is Riesling. Yields are exceptionally low and the best wines are aged in monumental 100-year-old casks. |
