Geek Alert! So What in the World is Sciaccarellu? Beautiful Corsican Red from Comte Abattucci So - if you haven't guessed already, Sciaccarellu is a native grape grown on the island of Corsica that thrives in the granitic soils found around Ajaccio and Sartène on the western coast of the island. In this case, it is made into a deliciously unique red wine by Comte Abbatucci, a small Domaine located near the capital city of Ajaccio in the heart of the AOC of the same name in Corsica. If you spend anytime here you will come to know the name, as there are streets and monuments and the like all named after French Revolution hero and General in Napoleon's army, Jean Charles Abbatucci. The current Jean Charles Abbatucci runs this Domaine on strictly biodynamic principals in the sunny Corsican climate. I am a huge fan of his wines, from the crisp whites to the dry refreshing rose wines to the solid and excellent reds. Sciaccarellu is often used as a blending wine and as the principal grape in the outstanding rose wines from this region (coming soon!), but here it makes up 100% of the blend coming from 20 year old vines planted in granitic soils. It is pale to medium ruby in color, light for red, but with an incredible nose of lavendar, crushed herbs, wild strawberries and dried red fruits. On the palate it is medium in body but with quite a broad, impressive and complex range of subtle fruit tones that belies its lightish color. Earth, leather, dried cherry and red fruits, and a hint of game, pepper and spice. Perfect with light meats such as chicken, pork, veal, game birds, or grilled meaty fish. You will want to drink this wine now and over the next year or so. Unique, delicious, organic/biodynamic and affordable - what more can you ask?
