Cellar Alert: Schiavenza's Fantastic, Traditional Barolos - Superb, Cellarworthy Wines, Excellent Prices I absolutely love the wines from this tiny family winery located in the heart of Barolo country in Serralunga d'Alba. I visited there in May of 2013 ( View Photos from our trip) for a warm, welcoming tasting and tour by Walter Anselma, and a terrific lunch on a brilliant spring day in their delicious trattoria overlooking the Serralunga vineyards. I would describe the wines as traditional and pure, not rustic at all, but beautifully crafted expressions of the terroir where they are grown. No new oak here, just large Botti, stainless steel and cemant for fermentation and aging, and gentle, non-intrusive and respectful winemaking. They are beginning to get some well deserved credit in the press (read high scores) and while good for the winery, it does mean that this little gem of a winery won't only be on our radar screen going forward and the wines will inevitably become harder to find. Prices are extremely reasonable and quality here is top notch. If you love classic Nebbiolo in all of its nervy, structured, dried cherry, spicy tar-and-rose-petal glory, this is for you! Wines arrive late this week. Cheers! One of the greatest parts of my job at 56 Degrees, and the most enjoyable, is tasting and discovering new wines that I simply love. In any given week there can be somewhere between several dozen to several hundred wines that make the cut! Communicating and sharing them with all of our terrific clients and followers of 56 Degree Wine is the second part of that equation. To facilitate sending more timely information without clogging your in boxes we keep an ongoing posting of new arrivals and interesting wines, along with other points of interest that I would like to share on vintages, visits to wine country, future wine events and more on our 56 Degree Wine Facebook and Twitter accounts. If you would like to be kept in the loop be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter! |
