Delicious, Affordable, Mature: Premier Cru White Burgundy Pre-Arrival from Lamy-Pillot Lamy-Pillot Saint Aubin Premier Cru Les Charmois 2008 This is exactly why I take the time, effort and expense (ok, tough job, I get it) to travel to Burgundy every year. Not only is it imperative to taste the new releases before making our buying decisions, many of our growers stash away small lots of wine to release on a rainy day - in this case as we head into vintages with very little wine to sell due to the weather-related small crops in 2012 and 2013. But Burgundy is persnickety, and even from trusted growers it is important to taste before committing. There are many more discoveries to come in the next weeks and months, but this superb 1er Cru Saint Aubin was one of the finds of the vintage! The Charmois vineyard sits on the south (Chassagne) side of the valley that cuts between Puligny and Chassagne Montrachet and forms the region of Saint Aubin. The Charmois 1er Cru vineyard is situated very close to the 1er Cru Chassagne vineyard of Les Chaumees, and its hallmarks are ripe, peachy yellow fruit aromas and flavors - rich and fullish on the palate, with nearly Chassagne like quality, richness and complexity - all with lovely mineral undertones to keep it tight. In warm years (2009 for example) it can almost be a little too much for me, but in cooler years like 2008 it can truly sing. In this case, it drinks like really good Chassagne with a little bottle age at a fraction of the price. This is a wine to lay in as much as you can and drink over the next year or two with lobster, seared sea scallops, roasted chicken, turkey, all kinds of meaty fish, or all on its own. A true steal and one of those finds that makes the Burgundy trips so worthwhile! Pre-sale offer. Wine arrives April 2014, just in time for spring and summer entertaining! Payment due with order.
