Faurie Hermitage 2004 Bessards/Méal: Outstanding Syrah from One of the Best The 2004 Faurie Hermitage Bessards/Méal is a classic example of traditional northern Rhone Syrah from one of the greatest vineyard sites in the world. When you drive up the Rhone and come face to face with the monolithic Hermitage hill looming above Tain l'Hermitage, you immediately can envision the Romans saying "let's plant grapes there!" While it is an imposing block of rock, cut off by the Rhone and standing alone on the east side of the river, it is actually a very complex terroir, with a number of lieu dits each with its own unique mix of soils, with granite playing a major role and various amounts of quartzite, clay, alluvial and limestone soils making up most of the rest. Most Hermitage is a blend of several of these different terroirs, each contributing to the style of a producers wine. Winemaking technique also plays a big role, and their are wide ranging approaches employed, ranging from various degrees of modern with emphasis on power, fruit and oak, to more traditional, old school or classical expressions. Bernard is the fifth generation of his family tending not only their apricot groves, but carefully farming their tiny 1.7 hectares of 100 year old vines. The Faurie Hermitages are decidedly traditional: hand harvested, whole clusters crushed by foot in old wooden tanks, natural yeast fermentation, and aged in old demi-muid for 18-36 months depending on the vintage. The resulting wines are truly exceptional. Plenty of richness and depth and Hermitage power, but all in a very fine, somewhat restrained package, with aromas of black pepper, smoked bacon, cassis, earth. Traditional, yes, but not rustic in any way. He makes several different cuvees, blends of his different parcels on the Hermitage hill. The Bessards/Méal we are offering today is from 100 year old vines in the primarily granite soils of Bessards on the western edge of the hill, and Méal, with a little more limestone and quartz. Tannins are firm but fine, and the 2004 has just begun to meld together and show its true potential. A great winter wine, perfect with game, venison, lamb, braised meats, stews, short-ribs. Drink now with a decanting, or over the next 3-6 years or more. Northern Rhone Syrahs are some of my favorite wines. Period. And this pure example from Faurie is something worth the splurge to experience one of the best expressions of the Syrah grape in one of its top terroirs, crafted by the capable hands of a master, and just entering its window of drink-ability.
